Ao menos uma vez por ano retire todos os livros das prateleiras/armários, limpe-os com um pano seco e -com as mãos limpas- folheie rapidamente cada um antes de devolve-lo à prateleira, para arejá-lo.
Evite passar lustra móveis nas prateleiras para que o produto não passe para os livros; use um pano ligeiramente úmido na limpeza e tenha certeza de colocar os livros de volta apenas quando as prateleiras estiverem absolutamente secas.
Também uma vez por ano é aconselhável um tratamento contra traças no cômodo.
Devemos encapar livros?
Na verdade, não é necessário. Quando encapamos um livro com papel pardo, com plástico, com papel de presente, com “contact” ou com outro material similar estamos fazendo uma migração ácida que com certeza vai prejudicar bastante o livro tornando o papel quebradiço e com manchas amareladas; isso porque o material que normalmente usamos para encapar um livro (não esqueça que ele já vem com capa, então pra que encapa-lo outra vez?) não é adequado, é de natureza ácida e transmite essa acidez ao livro.
Além disso ao encapar um livro usamos cola (PVA) ou fita adesiva que prejudicam tanto quanto os materiais ácidos, com a diferença de serem irreversíveis pois para remover cola ou fita adesiva agredimos o papel através de raspagens, e muitas vezes o papel rasga.
Existem livros que já vem com uma capa de proteção, móvel, por cima da capa dura e muitas pessoas retiram essa capa e jogam fora, o que é um erro. O papel dessas capas é adequado à proteção do livro (livre de ácidos), por isso, mantenha-o.

Can I use a damp cloth to clean books?
At least once a year remove all the books from shelves / cabinets, clean them with a dry cloth and - with the hands perfectly cleaned - flip quickly through each one's pages before returning to the shelf, to air them.
Avoid spraying furniture polish on the shelves so that the product does not pass to books, use a slightly damp cloth to clean them and make sure to put the books back only when the shelves are absolutely dry.
Also, once a year a treatment for moths in the room is recommended.
Should I put another cover on the books?
Actually, there's no need. When we skin a book with brown paper, with plastic, with papers used do wrap up presents, with "contact" or other similar material we are helping an acid migration to happen, and this will surely undermine the book making the paper brittle and with yellow spots; this is because the material we normally use for wrapping a book (do not forget that it comes with a cover, so what's the need to put another cover?) is not adequate, it is acid, and such acidity is transmited to the book.
In addition, while wrapping a book we use glue (PVA) or adhesive tape that are as harmful as the acidic materials, the only difference is that the results are irreversible because to remove tape or glue off the paper we have to scrape it and this often rips the paper.
There are books that come with a protective mobile cover over the hard cover, and many people take this cover and throw it out, which is wrong. The papers used on these covers are adequate for the protection of the book (acid free), so keep them.
